Biopsies and Oral Cancer
Oral Cancer in Costa Rica
Did You Know That Oral Cancer Is One of the Most Lethal Cancers Currently in Costa Rica?
The reason lies in the fact that it is generally not diagnosed in time.
Therefore, it is very important to have regular check-ups with a dentist trained to detect such lesions.
Diagnosis (Oral Cancer Costa Rica)
Oral cancer tends to spread very quickly, making early detection crucial.
At our clinic, we include an examination to detect signs of oral cancer or potentially malignant lesions as part of our evaluations.
This exam is painless and only takes a few minutes.
During the examination, we will check the face, neck, lips, and entire mouth for potential signs of cancer.
If we find something suspicious, a biopsy will be recommended to rule out any potential malignant lesion.
Mouth Biopsy
Biopsies are performed by our oral pathologist, Dr. Roberto Gerber Mora, a specialist in pathology and oral medicine from the University of Valparaíso, Chile.
It is also very important that if you experience any of the following symptoms for more than two weeks, you consult a dentist:
- A sore, irritation, lump, or thick patch in the mouth, lips, or throat.
- A white or red patch in the mouth.
- Sore throat or a feeling that something is stuck in the throat.
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking.
- Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue.
- Jaw swelling that causes dentures to fit poorly or become uncomfortable.
- Numbness of the tongue or other areas of the mouth.
- Ear pain.
There are certain factors that can increase the risk of potentially malignant lesions:
- Tobacco and alcohol use: Both significantly increase the risk of oral cancer.
- HPV: Infection with the human papillomavirus, which is transmitted through contact, has been linked to oral cancers.
- Age: The risk increases with age. Oral cancers are more common in people over 40 years old.
- Sun exposure: Sun exposure can cause lip cancer.
